A tragic fire broke out at a bar in Bangkok's Chatuchak district late Sunday night, leading to the deaths of at least 28 individuals and critically injuring 25 others. The incident occurred at the popular establishment Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao.

The fire ignited near the stage area of the bar and rapidly spread throughout the building, cutting off electricity and filling the space with smoke. Eyewitnesses reported seeing terrified patrons attempting to escape, with some running through the flames at the entrance.
Firefighters arrived shortly after midnight and managed to control the fire. Unfortunately, many victims were found in a bathroom, suggesting they had sought refuge there. According to national police chief Kitrat Panphet, panic ensued as the lights went out, and those trapped inside struggled to find a way out.
Survivor Accounts
Kaew-udon Poungppany, a 24-year-old from Laos, recounted his unsuccessful efforts to save his younger brother, who perished in the blaze. Another survivor, Usa Tadsree, narrowly escaped as she had stepped outside moments before the fire erupted. "There was a sudden loud noise, and it was impossible to exit," she recalled.
Possible Causes and Investigation
Preliminary investigations by the disaster mitigation department in Bangkok suggest that the fire might have been triggered by an electrical short circuit in an air conditioner. However, the exact cause remains to be officially determined, and authorities have assured a comprehensive investigation.
Past incidents have raised concerns about fire safety regulations in Thailand, which are often poorly enforced despite previous pledges for improvement.
Government Response and Investigation
Thailand's Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul visited the site on Monday, where he spoke with a musician who was performing when the fire started. The musician described a sudden explosion and the ensuing chaos as patrons tried to escape the smoke and flames. Many were trapped after seeking shelter in the building's rear areas, including the toilets.
Firefighters, alerted by a passing driver, were able to contain the blaze within approximately 30 minutes. Despite their swift response, 28 people lost their lives, and 71 more were injured, with 25 in critical condition.
Impact and Response
Bangkok's disaster mitigation director Suriyachai Raviwan indicated that most victims succumbed to smoke inhalation. The rapid spread of the fire may have been exacerbated by flammable materials used in the bar's interior decorations. Reports also suggest that obstacles at the emergency exit could have hindered escape efforts, although this requires further verification by forensic teams.
Local motorcyclist Surin Jaiharn assisted around five individuals in fleeing the fire, using clothes to extinguish flames on their bodies. Another witness, who notified the fire department, helped two people escape by breaking windows.
The bar has since been sealed off, with shattered windows and charred furniture visible outside. Graphic images have surfaced showing numerous body bags lined up at the scene.
Official Measures and Compensation
The Chatuchak district office announced a 30-day closure of the building housing the bar. Compensation has been pledged for the families of deceased victims and for those hospitalized. A sum of 29,300 Thai baht (approximately $880) will be provided to the families of the deceased, and 4,000 baht ($120) will be given to those receiving medical treatment.
This incident adds to a series of similar tragedies in Thailand, where fires have previously resulted in numerous casualties. Authorities continue to face challenges in enforcing fire safety standards effectively.
